CITY WALLS

CITY WALLS

- A stone carapace of the city –
The city walls are still a convincing proof of what Znojmo was like in the Middle Ages: an important and indispensable fortress guarding a strategic southern entrance to the lands of kings of Bohemia. The fortification system consisted of several belts of walls and ditches, only pierced by the four city gates. The walls were reinforced by plenty of towers, both circular and prismatic. From the 13th century when Znojmo obtained the right of fortification, the city walls of Znojmo were continuously improved to reflect the current level of military development. The oldest city wall belt is the highest, thickest and still well-preserved. It surrounds the entire city and its accessible top contains a line of embrasures or merlons. Walking today through the City Park (Městský park), which was founded in the places where the outermost city ditch and ramparts were situated, we can realize how powerful the city walls once were. The 16th-century artillery, however, changed warfare dramatically. The next centuries saw no use in maintaining the Znojmo city walls any more. After the Napoleonic Wars the long neglected fortifications were partially, but luckily not to great extent, demolished.
