OWN-HALL TOWER

18. TOWN-HALL TOWER

- The slim queen of the medieval city –
The icon of Znojmo, a symbol of the city’s rich past, the most beautiful example of the Znojmo Late Gothic art. By order of Znojmo councilmen, it was built by the stonemason Nicolas of Edelspitz (Sedlešovice) in 1445-1448. This unique slim, yet impressive prismatic tower has a very complex, yet elegant and dynamic roof construction containing two galleries and characteristic Gothic spires. This roof undoubtedly belongs to the best examples of the Late Gothic craftsmanship in the entire Czech Republic and Austria. From the top galleries the garrison could have had a detailed overview of what was going on inside as well as outside the city. It was an indispensable watch-tower from which any enemy approaching the city must have been spotted. Thus the main purpose of the tower was to function as the central mediating and commanding point for the whole fortification system of the city. At the end of World War II the tower was very lucky to avoid a total ruin: during a Soviet air-raid, a bomb slithered down the tower’s roof and rebounded from the side wall, destroying “only” the old town-hall below.
