DOMINICAN MONASTERY

15. DOMINICAN MONASTERY
- DECORATIVE BAROQUE A LA VIENNA –
The mendicant order of Dominican friars came to Znojmo soon after the city had been granted the royal charter in the first half of the 13th century. The king gave the Dominican friars quite a large allotment near the Eastern Gate where they could build a spacious monastery. Receiving many generous gifts from the Lords of Vajtmile, the monastery prospered particularly in the second half of the 15th century. Some parts of the cloister date back to this period. On the other hand, the Thirty Years’ War brought much poverty and misery to life in the Dominican Monastery. Luckily, the situation got better in the 2nd half of the 17th century, and so the Dominican friars could plan to rebuild the whole precincts. The lack of money, however, did not allow the whole reconstruction project to transpire: only the western front and a small part of the southern front (facing Dolní Česká Street) were rebuilt in the magnificent High Baroque style (the first third of the 18th century) on the basis of the structural design by Franz Knight de Roetiers, a Viennese architect. The monastery much suffered during the War of the Austrian Succession (1742), the Napoleonic Wars (1809) and particularly during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. During World War One, a military hospital was established in the monastery. In 1950 the monastery was invaded by the Communist Police and the friars were detained and sent to prison. Forty years had to pass before the Dominicans could return to their Znojmo home.
