THE SAVIOUR FLOGGED’S CHURCH IN DYJE (MÜHLFRAUN)

12. THE SAVIOUR FLOGGED’S CHURCH IN DYJE (MÜHLFRAUN)

- The most beautiful Baroque fresco far and wide –
A few kilometres below Znojmo, down the Dyje River, there is the village of Dyje (formerly called Mühlfraun before its German inhabitants were expelled after World War II). In the middle of the village, which for centuries belonged to the Louka Abbey demesne, there was a medieval St Lawrence’s Church demolished in 1769 due to severe deterioration. Gregor Lambek, the then Abbot of Louka, resolved to build a brand new church and invited the Viennese architect Kerndl to design it. The construction work took six years (1769-1775) and the result was breathtaking – a combination of Late Baroque and Classicism made this building something more than just an ordinary village church. It was consecrated in 1778 to the Saviour Flogged and the most precious feature was hidden inside the shrine: a splendid ceiling fresco painted by F. A. Maulbertsch, one of the most prominent artists of that time in Central Europe. The fresco still belongs to the best examples of Late Baroque art in Moravia, and is now being restored.
