SAINT CLEMENT MARIA HOFBAUER’S HOUSE

SAINT CLEMENT MARIA HOFBAUER’S HOUSE

- Where the saint trained to be a baker –
In the 18th century, the small Renaissance burgher house at Václavské nám. (Wenceslas Square) No 3 was a bakery in which Saint Clement Maria Hofbauer (1751-1820), later a patron saint of Warsaw and Vienna, was training to become a baker. Born in Tasovice (Taßwitz) near Znojmo, Clement Hofbauer was always keen on pursuing a clerical career. He went to Rome to study and soon became a head of the so called Redemptorists (the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer), who focused on missionary activities among poor villagers and maintained pilgrimage sites. In 1786-1808 Hofbauer worked in Warsaw and spread the influence of the Redemptorists in all of Central Europe. Thus Hofbauer was soon held in high esteem in his homeland, too. Emperor Franz I of Austria officially permitted the Redemptorists’ activities in 1820. In 1909 Clement Maria Hofbauer was canonized by Pope Pius X. The bi-lingual bronze plaque on Hofbauer’s House in Znojmo was unveiled in 2004.
