“DYJE” DEPARTMENT STORE

“DYJE” DEPARTMENT STORE
-A CONTROVERSIAL PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE FROM THE COMMUNIST ERA -
Znojmo as part of the Third Reich was heavily bombed by Soviet and American aircrafts in the final weeks of World War Two. The damage was huge. The houses standing below the Town-Hall Tower were eventually pulled down after the war. In 1969 - the period of so called “Normalisation” (when the Soviet army had occupied the whole country), the Communist administration of Znojmo decided to fill the empty place on Lower (Masaryk) Square with a controversial department store called “Dyje”. Projected by the Brno architects Josef Opatřil and Kamil Fuchs, this massive, over-dimensioned building has never fitted in with the neighbouring medieval burgher houses and noble palaces. The position and proportions of the department store deride all traditional urbanistic principles, and they show how insensitive if not brutal the civil engineering could be in Communist Czechoslovakia.
