GOLTZ PALACE

GOLTZ PALACE

- The biggest palace of the city -
Obroková street No 10 – the so called Goltz Palace - is apparently the biggest burgher palace in Znojmo. Today it is a seat of the Znojmo Municipal Authority, so it is commonly nicknamed “the New Town-Hall” (to differentiate it from the “old” Town-Hall at Obroková No 12). The palace appears to be a blend of three Gothic houses which went through a substantial architectural adaptation in the second half of the 16th century when they belonged to a Znojmo town councillor named Melichar Herr. At the end of the 16th century the unfinished palace with a sunny arcaded patio got into the hands of Günther von der Goltz, a colonel of the Habsburg army, who completed the reconstruction by inviting Italian-born Georgius Gialdi of Brno to create the main entrance portal to the palace (dated 1606). Guarded by the sculptures of Adam and Eve on either side, this portal surely belongs to the best works of the Late Renaissance art in South Moravia. During the Thirty Years’ War the palace belonged to Albrecht von Wallenstein’s comrade, Imperial General Martin Maxmilian von der Goltz. In 1661 the palace was sold to the Znojmo Town-Hall, in whose possession it has remained up to present. At the end of the 18th century the palace’s facade was altered in the Neo-Classicist style.
