HOUSE OF ARTS

HOUSE OF ARTS
- THE FIRST RENAISSANCE PALACE IN THE CITY –
House No 11 on the Lower (or Masaryk) Square, the House of Arts, belongs to the most beautiful examples of how Znojmo burghers prospered in the golden age of Renaissance. In the 1540s, when the Renaissance began to quickly spread north of the Alps, a spacious palace was built in the place of two narrow Gothic houses on the city’s principal square. It had a large entrance hall called “maashaus” (today there is a café there) and an elegant patio courtyard with a Tuscan column gallery. On the central pillar in the maashaus we can see the stonemason’s message: “All built in one year”. On the rear wing of the palace, facing Dolní Česká street, we can admire beautiful Renaissance sgraffiti. On the first floor there was a small home chapel of which a remarkable diamond vault has remained. Now we can find here a permanent exhibition of the Znojmo medal coiner J. T. Fischer and a display of numismatics.
