THE HOUSE OF UNDERSTANDING AND THE MINT HOUSE

THE HOUSE OF UNDERSTANDING AND THE MINT HOUSE

- A hidden Late Gothic jewel –
In the upper corner of Hen Market (Slepičí trh) there is quite an inconspicuous house (No 2) now called the House of Understanding. It was built in the first half of the 16th century as the city’s Mint Office. Passing through a short gateway, we suddenly find ourselves in another time dimension: standing in the middle of a two-storeyed arcade patio we can feel the place breathes with the Italian sun. The arcade galleries perfectly show the transitional stage between the Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. Opposite the gateway there is an entrance to the Znojmo subterranean labyrinth. Today the House of Understanding is an art gallery. It is adjacent to an even more representative building of the city’s former Mint House, facing the busy Obroková street (house No 11). The right to mint coins in the Late Middle Ages was only granted to a few royal cities in Bohemia and Moravia. Znojmo coins were one-sided, and there was an eagle with the shield and the letter Z on its breast. The outer facade of the Mint House was restored in the Empire style at the beginning of the 19th century, yet a Late Gothic inscription dated 1472 is still visible. The grandeur of the Mint House can only be matched with the Town-Hall situated opposite.
