BREWERY AT ZNOJMO CASTLE

BREWERY AT ZNOJMO CASTLE

- An icon of Znojmo Castle –
In 1710 Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I sold the outer part of Znojmo Castle with dilapidated administrative buildings, the Romanesque St Catherine’s Rotunda and the Robber Tower to the Znojmo City Council. After a few years Znojmo burghers decided to build their own brewery here. Originally, it was just a one-wing building attached to the northern castle wall. In front of the brewery and around the rotunda there was a lovely public garden - a rendezvous – very popular with Znojmo burghers. In the 1840s the Council sold the brewery to the Maural Family, who had the whole brewery rebuilt and extended to the south during the second half of the 19th century. All construction work had detrimental effects on the statics of the Late Romanesque Robber Tower. In 1892 it unexpectedly collapsed. After World War Two the brewery was put under state control by communists. In the 1990s it became a private enterprise again. The brewery buildings, though built only for industrial use, show a decent approach of the Belle Époque architects and prove that even technical structures can to a certain extent be in harmony with historic environment.
