RED BRIDGE ACROSS THE LESKA VALLEY

RED BRIDGE ACROSS THE LESKA VALLEY

- The beauty of raw bricks and tall arches -
In December 1866 Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph I approved of construction of another railway connection between Vienna and Brno - via Laa an der Thaya and Moravsky Krumlov. A western branch of this new railway, beginning in Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou / Grussbach, was to connect Znojmo as well. It was not a difficult task to build this railway branch as it runs through flatland of the Dyje Vale east of Znojmo. The only exception was the deep Leska Valley, on the outskirts of Znojmo. A brick bridge had to be built, which went beyond the skills of local workforce. Therefore, Petr Lenarduzzi&Togno, a specialized Italian company, was commissioned to carry out this difficult task. In those days it was one of the biggest brick constructions of its kind in Central Europe. And fastest, too! It was finished in just thirteen months in May 1870. The Red Bridge (red as the colour of the bricks) is ninety metres long and twenty-five metres high. Its four mighty arches are really impressive. The bridge is wide enough to have two railroad tracks on it as the architect originally counted with the direct railway Znojmo–Brno (which unfortunately has not been built up to present day).
