TUNNELS IN THE RAILWAY EMBANKMENT BETWEEN DOBŠICE AND SUCHOHRDLY

TUNNELS IN THE RAILWAY EMBANKMENT BETWEEN DOBŠICE AND SUCHOHRDLY

- Hidden marvels of technical architecture –
Going out of Znojmo along II/413 road towards Suchohrdly, we turn left just in front of the railway crossing and follow a field track towards Dobšice (an independent suburb of Znojmo). In the high railway embankment that we follow on the left-hand side, there are three brick tunnels, very interesting technical structures, which show virtuosity of 19th century civil engineers. The tunnels were built simultaneously with the railway Znojmo – Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou in 1869/1870 and their purpose was to preserve or re-connect the existing field tracks and to enable the Dobšice Brook to get through the embankment. The most remarkable is the third, furthest tunnel, situated near Dobšice, which connects two different terrain levels (the railway embankment leads on a steep slope there). The ceiling was constructed as a series of vaulted up-side-down cascades. Having visited the tunnels, we can carry on walking along the Znojmo Battle Trail and taste some delicious wines in Dobšice.
