CITY PARK

CITY PARK

- The lungs in the heart of Znojmo –
There are only few towns and cities in Czechia which can boast a continuous line of public green space right in the middle of the agglomeration. The Znojmo City Park is situated on the edge between the medieval town and the modern quarters, and it certainly shows the delicate taste of the 19th century Znojmo city planners. When the city walls had been doomed to perish, a group of Znojmo citizens set about the project to plant a belt of tree alleys that would in a couple of years surround one half of the historic city in the place of the outer city moat. Thus the City Park was founded (1804). The decaying outer city wall was transformed into a park fence, the bastions and small towers turned into Classicist pavilions. The park is divided into three parts – upper, middle and lower. In the Lower Park we can find an interesting ceramic fountain dating back to the end of the 19th century. Since its foundation, the City Park has been very popular with Znojmo citizens. They are a peaceful oasis in the heart of a busy town.
