Na Vyhlídce Street

• 62. Na Vyhlídce Street
- The lookout of Znojmo’s first Czech mayor -
In the interwar period Znojmo spread to the north, along Pražská třída (Prague Avenue). A new street called Na Vyhlídce (“At the Lookout”) was laid out right on the edge of the Granice Valley and it was this street that the first Czech mayor of Znojmo, Dr. Mareš, chose for his luxurious residence. The view is truly magnificent. Below us and to the right there is the deep Granice Valley and on its opposite side the romantic hamlet of Hradiště with the Baroque St Hippolytus’ Church. In front of us the valley bends towards its confluence with the Dyje River canyon in the background. There is of course Znojmo Castle and to the left, the roofs and towers of medieval Znojmo. Just in front of us, across the ravine, there is the Minorite Monastery with the adjacent high building of the former Franciscan hospital (now the South Moravian Museum headquarters). Further to the left, there are the representative villas of Na Valech Street, behind which there used to be the medieval Jewish ghetto. The landmark of this view, however, is St Michael’s Church, namely its lofty white west front. Further left, there is the Thick Tower.
