Znojmo skyline from the south-east

• 61. Znojmo skyline from the south-east
- From where the enemy would observe the city -
If we follow the road from Znojmo to Jaroslavice, we go past Načeratice Hill, a solitary mound clearly visible from near and far, as it stands out of the monotonous plains of the Dyje Vale east of Znojmo. From the Middle Ages up to the 18th century a gibbet used to be placed here on the summit of the hill, forewarning the serfs of the Louka abbots against any disobedience. Of old, any enemy approaching Znojmo from Lower Austria would stop here to observe the happening in and around the city. To the left, there is the magnificent Baroque building of the Louka Abbey, unfortunately surrounded by the ugly 1970s concrete blocks of flats. More to the south we can see Cow Mountain with its picturesque vineyards and the cosy villages of Konice a Popice. To the east, there are fertile plains of the Dyje Vale, in the distance we can discern the silhouette of the Pálava Hills and the town of Mikulov (southern Moravia), and the high rock of Castle Staatz and the Leiserberge Hills (Lower Austria).
