VLKOVA (WOLVES) TOWER - PART OF THE LOWER GATE

Witness to cruel battles for the city

The best preserved and also the largest squared tower of the Gothic fortifications of Znojmo used to form a part of a complex fortification system of the Lower, or Vienna gate, situated on the site of today's Kollárova street, from which a strategic land route led to Austria from the town. From a covered gallery on the top of the tower under a roof, the town's defenders had a perfect overview of all movements of the enemy in the wide down slope geosyncline under Znojmo and at the same time they could effectively use their artillery on the armies in front of the gate. They also communicated with the defenders of the Premonstratensian monastery in Louka downriver, using agreed signals. Vlkova tower was built in the mid 13th century as a part of the main fortification wall belt around the whole town. For reasons of security, it could only be accessed from the rampart gallery (today's outer staircase). The opening giving access to the tower's ground floor is of a later date. Next to the tower, parallel to Kollárova street, connecting the interior and the zwinger fortification belt, there was a low squared gate with iron grating and a drawbridge across the deep moat around the zwinger wall. Another gate was located at the edge of the outer moat wall, beyond which another deep water moat was dug up in the second half of the 15th century. At this time, efforts to stop the enemy from penetrating the town through the Lower gate led to the construction of a modern outpost fortification (barbican) with a chain of low, cylindrical bastions, allowing effective sideways weapon fire. It used to stand where today's Kollárova street enters the Republiky square and it was separated from the Lower periphery by another moat. The fields under the Lower gate were often the site of bloody battles for the town. The last was the memorable battle of Znojmo in 1809, when the retreating Austrian armies defended themselves here against the advancing army of the French emperor Napoleon I. In mid 19th century, the ingenious system of the Lower gate was liquidated, the moats were filled up and all gates torn down. Only Vlkova tower survived. In the 60ies of the 20th century the wooden gallery at the top of the tower was renewed, however the original gouged shape of the roof was then replaced by a neological cone shape.
