- Where menservants and the city’s executioner dwelt -

In a leeward ravine between Znojmo Castle and St Nicholas’ Church, Znojmo’s Old Town lies hidden, sometimes also called the Hollow. There are two dozens of smaller houses there, built without any unifying plan, simply where the steep slope allowed it. A 15th-century wall protects the Old Town from the Dyje Valley. The only opening in this wall is the romantic Little Black Gate through which we may enter Caroline’s Garden. Right here, through the Old Town, a trade route led of old which connected Moravia and Lower Austria. After Znojmo got its city charter in the 13th century, the route was shifted from the Old Town to the “New Town” (via Obroková Street, Masaryk Square and the Vienna Gate). In the Hollow there lived Znojmo’s poorest people in the Middle Ages - menservants, labourers, stable boys, shepherds, and also those whose job excluded them somehow from society: gravediggers and also the city’s very much feared executioner. Today we need not fear to enter the Old Town. Painters and dreamers like coming here to admire the picturesque houses and views of St Nicholas’ Church while young loving couples seek here a little bit of peace and quiet, sitting down on a bench in the shadow of trees.
