GRANICE FOREST PARK
- A forested miniature of the Grand Canyon –
Historic Znojmo and St Hippolytus Mount are separated from each other by an unusually deep-cut valley of the brook called Granice. The valley remained deforested through most of the Middle Ages for strategic reasons (the enemy should not hide behind trees!). After 1878 when the newly-constituted Beautifying and Foresting Club of Znojmo and the City Council began to co-operate on a lot of development projects, the Granice Forest Park was founded. The main entrance to the park was opened at the end of Přemyslovců street, in front of the former Minorite (Franciscan) Monastery. A network of quality paths was built, winding zigzag on the slopes of the valley. There are lookouts, romantic stone niches with benches, cast-iron handrails all along, and down by the brook, a few footbridges to make the network of paths functional. In the interwar period the Granice Forest Park was connected with Caroline’s Garden by a new trail leading on the slopes of the Znojmo Castle hill.
